Women in the Revolution

Emily Geiger was very brave. She was a Patriot and she proved it. She convenced General Greene to take a letter to General Sumter’s camp about their camps joining forces and defeating the British. The reason that she volunteered was beacause 1. She had family that lived in that general direction and she could just say that she was just visiting if she got caught, and 2. She was a woman, and women back then were not excpected to be smart enough to be spies. General Greene let her take the note, so she did. On the way on the first night, Emily found a barn and the couple that owned it, invited her inside their house and let her sleep. That morning she woke up to the sound of a man’s voice. The man was saying that he had heard that there was a woman riding in the woods and if the couple had found her to tell him. Emily had then thought that her hosts were tories {Loyalists} so Emily snuck out without them knowing. While Emily was riding in the woods, she saw some men in red coats. She knew that they were British Soldiers so she tried to run, but she was caught and had to be searched. She was brought to this woman’s place to be searched because men could not search women. she still had the letter and knew that the woman would find it so little by little Emily memorized the note abuot the camps. Emily then tore the paper, and ate it. She was then searched and was found innocent. After that she was released and started riding again. She then found the camp and was let in to tell General Sumter what the note said. He belived her and met at the meeting spot. The camps then joined forces and defeated the british.
